Social media is a hotbed for scammers and hackers, telegram is no different. Telegram has become one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. 

It’s fast, easy to use, and many people believe it’s very secure. With over 900 million users, it’s trusted by individuals, communities, and even businesses.

But here’s the truth — Telegram is not as private or safe as most people think. Some of its features can actually put your information at risk if you don’t use them carefully.

1. Telegram’s Group Chats Aren’t Always Private

Telegram’s group chats can have thousands of members. This makes them great for organizing or sharing updates, but they are not fully private.

By default, messages in groups are not end-to-end encrypted, which means Telegram and anyone in the chat could access them if they wanted or were forced to.

Also, group data like your username, profile photo, and when you send messages can be recorded. This is risky, especially for people in politically sensitive or high-risk groups.

-Don’t use your real phone number — use a temporary one if possible.

-Closed-source servers: We can’t see what really happens with your data.

-IP and metadata logging: Telegram saves your IP address, timestamps, and who you interact with.

-Cloud storage: Regular chats are stored on Telegram’s servers.

-Phone number required: You must link your phone number, which hurts your anonymity.

4. How to Stay Safer on Telegram

You don’t need to stop using Telegram — just use it wisely. Here are some tips:

Use Secret Chats:

These chats are fully encrypted and can’t be read by Telegram.

→ Tap on a contact → Select Start Secret Chat.

Turn off auto-downloads:

To stop Telegram from saving media on its servers:

→ Go to Settings → Data and Storage → Auto-Download Media and turn it off.

Delete old chats:

Long-press on chats and tap Delete Chat or Clear History to remove messages.

Use private browsers for Telegram Web:

If you use Telegram in a browser, use Brave or Tor for better privacy.

Use an anonymous or temporary number:

Don’t link your real phone number — use a temporary number instead.

Use a privacy VPN:

5. Telegram vs Other Apps

While Telegram is flexible and feature-rich, other apps like Signal are safer by default. Signal is fully open-source, doesn’t log your data, and uses end-to-end encryption for every chat.

But even Signal doesn’t hide your internet traffic completely — using it with a VPN gives you even more protection.

6. The Truth About Telegram’s Encryption

Telegram likes to talk about security, but it’s easy to misunderstand how it really works. This is the most critical point of confusion. Telegram’s Marketing heavily emphasizes its security, but what many users don't realize is that end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is not the default.

Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted — meaning only you and the recipient can read the messages. They are not stored on Telegram's servers and cannot be forwarded. This is the gold standard.

Cloud Chats, which are the default, are not. Telegram can access these because they are stored on their servers.

This is why you can use Telegram from many devices — but it also means your messages could be exposed if Telegram’s servers are hacked or accessed by authorities.

7. Metadata and IP Exposure

Even if you use Secret Chats, Telegram still collects metadata — who you talked to, when, and your IP address.This information can be used to trace your activity or even identify your location.

Using a decentralized VPN (dVPN) can help mask your online footprint.

8. Your Greatest Vulnerability is your Real Phone Number

Telegram accounts are tied to phone numbers, not just usernames. This can cause several problems:
